Tips on Fitting Exercise into a Busy Schedule
It is not uncommon to feel like you have no time left in your day to work out, let alone attend a yoga class. With hectic work or school schedules, busy weekends, and family obligations it may be difficult to squeeze in 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. Try these tips for bumping up the exercise in your life:
- Break it up into short bouts. Physical activity can be accumulated throughout the day in 10 minute periods instead of all at once. This may work better with a busy schedule.
- Mix it up. Combine moderate and vigorous intensity physical activity to meet the guidelines. Take a brisk walk for 30 minutes three times per week and jog at a higher intensity on the other two days.
- Set your schedule. Set aside specific days and times to exercise, and make it a regular part of your routine just like everything else. Sign up for a yoga class or fun activity at your local fitness center.
- Forget about the gym. You can easily get the recommended amount of exercise without an expensive gym membership. All you need is a pair of sneakers and some motivation! Your local library or Blockbuster may even carry a variety of yoga DVDs you can try out at home.
- Make it a family affair. Exercising with your spouse, children or a friend can make working out more exciting. You’ll motivate each other to work harder and have fun at the same time! Exercising with your kids will also encourage them to be physically active and provide a positive example of how to live a healthy lifestyle.
